DUBAI: Pakistan's bowlers sealed an emphatic 71-run win in the third and final Test against England here on Monday, wrapping up a humiliating 3-0 series whitewash in the process.

Set a daunting 324-run target, England were bowled out for 252 with paceman Umar Gul taking 4-61 and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal 4-67 to help Pakistan achieve a first-ever Test cleansweep against their opponents.
With the ball turning again it was always going to be a difficult task for England's batsmen, who have struggled to play the Pakistani spinners throughout the series, on a weary fourth day pitch at Dubai Stadium.

Pakistan won the first Test here by ten wickets and the second by 72 runs in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan have also become the first team to win a Test after being bowled out for under 100 since 1907 when England, shot out for 76, beat South Africa at Leeds.

The findings indicate that moderate caffeine drinking, or perhaps even applying coffee to the skin, could be useful in warding off non-melanoma cancer, the most commonly diagnosed of all skin cancers.

Using mice that had been genetically altered to suppress a protein enzyme called ATR, researchers showed that the mice were able to fend off cancer even when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Previous studies have suggested that drinking about a cup of caffeinated coffee per day has the effect of suppressing ATR and triggering the die-off of cells harmed by UV rays.

The altered mice eventually did develop cancer, but three weeks later than normal mice, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

After 19 weeks of ultraviolet light exposure, the engineered mice showed 69 percent fewer tumors and four times fewer invasive tumors than the control group.

However, the protective effects only went so far. After 34 weeks of UV exposure, all the mice developed tumors.

"Eventually, if you treat them long enough, the mice will develop cancer so it is not 100 percent protection forever," Allan Conney, one of the study's authors, told AFP.

"Really, with almost any carcinogen, eventually all the animals will develop tumors," added Conney, who is director of the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Conney and his team were able to confirm their hypothesis that caffeine -- when consumed or applied to the skin -- works by inhibiting ATR. Now they say more studies are needed to see how it may work on humans.

"We want to see whether caffeine has an effect in people when you give it topically," he said.

"Caffeine might become a weapon in prevention because it inhibits ATR and
also acts as a sunscreen and directly absorbs damaging UV light."

Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the United States, with more than one million new cases each year, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Non-melanoma types of skin cancer, including basal cell and squamous cell types, are the most commonly diagnosed and are often treatable if detected early.

Previous studies have shown coffee drinkers tend to have fewer incidences of breast, uterine, prostate and colon cancers, but the beneficial effects are not seen in people who drink decaffeinated coffee.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-91308053172097772122011-08-19T02:55:00.000-07:002011-08-19T02:55:06.800-07:00RIM set to launch BlackBerry music service

NEW YORK: Canada's Research in Motion (RIM) is developing a new service that would allow subscribers to play music on their BlackBerry smartphones, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The option is "designed to work with RIM's BlackBerry Messenger," the newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources who had discussed the service with RIM executives.

The new service, to be known as BBM Music, could be launched "as soon as next week," and allow subscribers to access around 50 songs at one time for an as-yet unspecified price, the report said.

According to the paper, the company has already signed, or are preparing to sign, agreements with four music power houses - Vivendi Universal Music, Sony Music, Warner and EMI.

The move is aimed at attracting younger consumers to the product, which is facing tough competition from Apple's iPhone and others.

According to a study by ComScore published in July, the iPhone is now more widely used than the BlackBerry in the US market.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-34900122415485045122011-08-17T05:42:00.000-07:002011-08-17T05:42:39.830-07:00Salman Khan gets back his lucky charm

MUMBAI: Actor Salman Khan and his beloved bracelet are almost inseparable. It was his father, writer Salim Khan who had gifted the turquoise blue bracelet to Salman few years back and the actor has never stopped wearing it since then.

Fans saw it first in the 1998 hit film ‘Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’ and since then we are sure almost all of them have got themselves something resembling it. Sallu considers it to be his lucky charm and has seldom parted with it, both on and off screen.

However, the star had to keep the adored object away for his super hit film ‘Dabangg’. Director Abhinav Kashyap had requested him to part with his bracelet as he felt that it would not go well with the image of a desi cop. As a result, Salman had to remove the bracelet whenever he was called for shots.

In his upcoming film ‘Bodyguard’, Salman portrays the role of a no-nonsense bodyguard and dons a proper stitched suit and glares to get the macho effect. This time again, it was being said that he would have to part with his bracelet for the demand of the script. However, recently few of the posters of film exhibit the bracelet in his hand.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-16167023455085534272011-08-09T08:56:00.000-07:002011-08-09T08:56:16.752-07:00Incredible 18 Photos of Trees.......... 3 Bananas a day cuts risk of stroke.
British and Italian researchers have found that eating three bananas cuts the risk of a stroke.

They said that having one banana for breakfast, one for lunch and one in the evening would provide enough potassium to reduce the chances of suffering a blood clot on the brain by around 21 per cent.

The findings suggest that thousands of strokes could be prevented by the consumption of other potassium-rich foods such as spinach, nuts, milk, fish and lentils, reports the Daily Mail.

Although some previous studies have suggested bananas could be important for controlling blood pressure and preventing strokes, results have not always been consistent.

In the latest research, scientists analysed data from eleven different studies - dating back to the mid-Sixties - and pooled the results to get an overall outcome.

They found a daily potassium intake of around 1,600 mg, less than half the UK recommended daily amount for an adult of 3,500mg, were enough to lower stroke risk by more than a fifth.

The average banana contains around 500 milligrams of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure and controls the balance of fluids in the body.

Too little potassium can lead to an irregular heartbeat, irritability, nausea and diarrhoea.

Researchers from the University of Warwick and the University of Naples said, "Potassium intake in most countries is well below the recommended daily amount."

But if consumers ate more potassium-rich foods and also reduced their salt intake, the annual global death toll from strokes could be cut by more than a million a year.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-77357974663928841822011-08-07T04:46:00.000-07:002011-08-07T04:46:30.239-07:00'Sprouts' like never before

'Sprouts' like never before
Discover germinated vegetables and grains making way on a healthy menu

Off the shelf
Sprouts are sprouting a whole new line. It's not just germinated pulses, but grain and vegetable sprouts are claiming imagination and supermarket shelves to add colour to your summer salads.

Some organic produce providers have been making available broccoli sprouts. Samar Gupta of Trikaya Agriculture, who also supplies broccoli sprouts to supermarkets like Godrej Nature's basket, says, "Broccoli sprouts look like alphalpha sprouts."

Some of the other interesting sprouts he supplies include brussel sprouts. They look like miniature cabbages and are extremely adorable. But don't even mistakenly pop them in your mouth raw. "It's quite pungent in taste," warns Gupta.

If you want to add brussel sprouts to your salads, make sure you stir-fry them first, suggests food consultant Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal.

Make your own
Cereals also make for great sprouts for your salad. If you like a nutty flavour, try sprouting sesame, suggests Rushina. "They are crunchy and slightly sweet and remind of soaked almonds," she says. To srpout sesame seeds (with husks), soak them in water in a shallow. Once they swell, drain the water and dry well by rubbing gently with a kitchen paper. Then transfer sesame seeds on a dry sheet of kitchen paper and place it in an airtight container. Spread out thinly, close tightly and leave for a few hours. Then put in the fridge overnight. It will have sprouted the next morning.

You can even sprout sunflower seeds, suggests Danesh Madon, who owns Eaternal, a producer and exporter of organic foods.

Other cereals that you can sprout include oats, wheat, maize (corn), rice, barley, rye and buckwheat. However, please make note: you can't sprout processed or polished cereals," warns Chef Vernon Coelho.

How to sprout
Wash well and soak the cereal of your choice in clean water for some hours. Then transfer the cereal into a muslin cloth, tie it up and place it in the fridge. Chef Coelho says it's important to place the muslin cloth in the refrigerator, as, "The malting process is known to be ideal for bacteria growth at room temperature, especially in summers." he cautions.

Cereals take slightly more time to sprout than pulses, so you may check the muslin cloth from time to time. "Every time you open the muslin cloth, slightly shake the cereals, and sprinkle some water if it feels dry," he advises.

Cooking with sprouted cereals
The options are limitless. Chef Ceolho suggests pureeing the germinated grains, and using it as a batter for pancakes/ dosas. These purees make for great dips too. Just drizzle some olive oil and add a hint of green chillies, mint and lime.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-60460777379710514162011-08-07T04:37:00.000-07:002011-08-07T04:37:28.128-07:00Sonakshi Sinha's not afraid of Sheila and Munni!

Sonakshi, Akshay in a still from the film
Sonakshi, Akshay in a still from the film More Pics
Sonakshi Sinha is preparing to shoot for her first ever item song in Shirish Kunder's Joker. The song is being choreographed by Farah Khan, who made Katrina Kaif go super skinny for her song Sheila Ki Jawaani.

Sonakshi stresses she hasn't lost any weight for the role, adding she's confident about her item song in spite of the Munnis and Sheilas.

About her first item song...
I guess the word 'item' is used to spice things up a bit. To me, it's a dance number in a film where I'm the main lead. I have always loved to dance and haven't yet got the chance to go all out in a film. So when Farah told me about this number, I was more than happy to take on the challenge.

On matching up to other items girls...
I am not apprehensive at all. Everyone has their own charm and their own style, and I'm very comfortable in my own space and confident of my abilities, I wouldn't compare myself to anyone. All I have to do is give it my best. Farah is there to take care of the rest. As far as preparations go, I will definitely be rehearsing for it before we start filming.

Ready to do a raunchy song like Munni?
Firstly, Munni was anything but raunchy. Malaika was dressed in a ghagra choli and was dancing with her brother-in-law ( Salman Khan), so it was far from raunchy. So yeah, not every song is a Munni, and if something really good came along, because I love to dance, I would take it up provided I am in my comfort zone.

Weight issue...
Neither Farah nor Shirish asked me to lose weight. I lost weight before Dabangg. Now I am very happy with the way I look and so are the people I am working with. I would lose weight for a role if it demanded it, and if I really liked the role, but I would never ever put on weight for a role. After losing those 30 kilos, I can't imagine going back there ever again!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-65359072165101704512011-08-06T16:41:00.001-07:002011-08-06T16:41:57.518-07:00Taiwan develops reprint able e-papers

TAIPEI: Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has developed e-paper that can be reprinted 260 times.
The e-paper would be able to function various colors at various parts of the sheet. This also helps to keep the production cost low. The colors do not mix up.
ITRI's e-paper can be printed in a number of ways including with thermal, electrical and physical technology. With small modifications, thermal printers in fax machines can be used to print on the e-paper.

The captain made a 57-ball 104 not out, smashing five sixes and 12 fours in a superb display of hard and clean hitting to help his team post a challenging 198-3 in the day-night match at the Pallekele International Stadium.

Australia were restricted to 163-8, with opener David Warner top-scoring with a 31-ball 53 with the help of two sixes and six fours.

Sri Lanka virtually wrapped up the match when they reduced Australia to 63-4 in the opening nine overs, with debutant off-spinner Dilruwan Perera doing the maximum damage with three wickets.

Dilshan needed 16 runs to complete his hundred in the last over bowled by paceman Mitchell Johnson, but struck two sixes and as many fours. His second fifty came off just 16 deliveries.

The Sri Lankan captain and Jeevan Mendis (29 not out off 19 balls) plundered 104 runs in the last 7.3 overs to help their team set a stiff target.

Dilshan, who also added 52 for the third wicket with Kumar Sangakkara (30), went for big shots after 15 overs, hitting four boundaries in an over from seamer John Hastings and then two sixes and as many fours off Shane Watson.

Sangakkara was batting confidently before driving Watson straight to White at mid-wicket. He hit four boundaries in his 22-ball knock.

Fast bowlers Brett Lee, Johnson and Watson each took one wicket.

The second and final Twenty20 game will be played at the same venue on Monday.

Australia will also play five one-day internationals and three Tests on their tour.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-9930852710498861492011-08-04T08:51:00.000-07:002011-08-04T08:51:20.188-07:00Shahrukh and Salman to face off at box office

MUMBAI: Competition between Bollywood movies released on the same day is nothing new, but this time the completion will be between movies released on different dates.
Salman Khan's 'Bodyguard' is scheduled for release on August 31 and after the success of Dabaang and Ready he will aim to conquer the box office once again. Both movies are action thrillers and have heavy expectations pinned to them.
The release of two movies will decide which of the two Khan's will end up being Bollywood's leading man. SARAJEVO: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie was close to tears as she received a special award during an unannounced visit to Sarajevo's film festival Saturday with partner Brad Pitt.

"I will start crying if you don't stop," Oscar-awarded Jolie told the audience who gave her a standing ovation at the city's National Theater.

Jolie chose Bosnia's 1992-95 war as the setting for her first film as a director. "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is due to be released in December.

She has also visited Bosnia as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N.'s refugee agency UNHCR and funded the construction of several houses for returnees in eastern Bosnia.

Festival director Mirsad Purivatra presented Jolie with a heart-shaped award when she appeared at the closing ceremony.

"Tonight we are giving the honorary Heart of Sarajevo to a great artist, not only for the great impact she has in the world of cinema but also for persisting and her active engagement in the complexities of the real world we live in," Purivatra said.

Jolie, dressed in a long peach dress, stood on stage with eyes full of tears waiting for the clapping to die down.

"I told Brad in the car I was afraid I was going to cry," she said, her voice breaking.

Jolie's film tells the story of a love affair between a Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) woman and a Serb, who were on opposite warring sides during the conflict.

She planned to shoot parts of the film in Sarajevo and engaged a local crew. But she had to move to Budapest after some female victims of sexual violence objected to details in the plot and Bosnian authorities canceled a filming permit.

"I am so honored to be here at this festival," Jolie said after receiving the award. "There is no greater example of the strengths of the artists and the festival that began during the war and grew stronger every year."

The Sarajevo film festival was launched toward the end of the Bosnian capital's 43-month siege by Bosnian Serb forces.

Jolie presented Austrian actor Thomas Schubert with the award for the best actor for his role in the film "Atmen," directed by Karl Markovics.

Atmen, about a young offender searching for his mother, was also named best film in the festival.

Romanian actress Ada Condeascu won the prize for best actress for her role in the film "Loverboy."
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994004631720315376.post-45735259215799483052011-07-31T10:05:00.000-07:002011-07-31T10:05:19.828-07:00POL prices being revised upward

The result of this, of course, is that when they do have valid grievances, they are lost in the mire. One such complaint should have been made after the article by Mike Selvey on Cricinfo. He writes a tremendous summary of the changes that the opening stanza of a test match has had, mentioning everyone from Jack Hobbs to Tamim Iqbal. However, One name was conspicuous by its absence – as it always seems to be. This is not to say that I am dissing on Selvey’s article (after all, amongst others, it doesn’t mention Sunil Gavaskar and Geoffrey Boycott); but the general absence of Saeed Anwar’s name from any such list is far too common to be ignored.
The 1990s were perhaps the most difficult times to be an opener. Each country – with the possible exceptions of England and New Zealand – had as good a new-ball attack as they’ve ever had. In this age, Anwar was the outstanding opening batsman in Test cricket.
And unlike his contemporaries –and what is expected from Pakistani opening batsmen – he averaged higher away from home than in Pakistan. The evidence of his versatility is in the fact that despite playing only 55 Tests, he managed to score hundreds away to every Test playing nation he toured except, weirdly enough, Zimbabwe. He, in fact, averaged over 40 in three of four countries that have been most difficult for subcontinent batsmen (South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand). By comparison, a modern great (Sehwag) averages above 40 in only one of these nations. But it isn’t just the numbers that speak of his extraordinariness; he scored his runs at a quicker pace than the men who supposedly brought attacking openers into fashion (Michael Slater and Sanath Jayasuria).
Even then, it would be a disservice to him to try and understand his batting by just numbers. The methodology he employed was one of caressing the ball to its desired location; always seeming to be in control. A Saeed Anwar shot was a work-of-art, something that generated gasps from the most cynical of cricket fans. To watch him in full flight was to rise above partisanship, for something that beautiful could never be the property of one people. There was a pleasure in watching a genius scale the heights of elegance and effortlessness; and there was pride to have witnessed it. He wasn’t a textbook player when attacking: he, quite often, played away from his body. But like Sehwag a generation later, he realized that when you have superhuman hand-eye-coordination and supreme sense of timing, you don’t need to follow any textbook. Indian fans used to say, “On the off-side, first there is God, and then there is Ganguly.” Pakistani fans would scratch their heads and wonder who this God fellow was, and how could he really be better than Saeed?
And I haven’t even mentioned his ODI record yet – where, for most of the decade, he competed alongside Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara in the race to overhaul the centuries’ record set by Desmond Haynes.
And again, the numbers stack up in his favour: he was one of only three players (the other two being Tendulkar and Lance Klusener) to score his runs at an average above forty, with a strike-rate in excess of eighty. It was in this form of the game, though, that he excelled and made what little fame he has. As the greatest practitioner of the belief that you don’t need to go above the infield when you can go through it, he played many an amazing knocks; none more so that on a humid afternoon in Chennai.
Not only did he play his greatest ODI innings against India, he also produced one of the greatest knocks in Pakistani test history. In 1999, in the first match of the Asian Test Championship (in what was, essentially, the decider of the Pakistan-India test series), he carried his bat scoring 188 runs on a pitch on which the second highest innings score was 232. That match is now remembered for the arrival of Shoaib Akhtar, and the excellence of Saqlain Mushtaq and Wasim Akram; when, in fact, it should’ve been celebrated as the crowning achievement of Anwar.
Time plays tricks with the greatest of minds. Anwar was a rare genius: a man who was appreciated neither in his time, nor after it. Surely, it is time to give credit to the greatest batsman of Pakistan’s golden generation.
The next time you have a debate over who is Pakistan’s greatest ever batsman, just remember to mention his name alongside Javed, Inzy, Hanif, Yousuf and Zaheer.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
